Help
The short version of how things work. The Guide covers everything, step by step.
Getting started
The app opens with an empty library, so the first step is bringing in a book.
- Open Library › + › Import EPUB and choose a DRM-free EPUB from Files.
- Tap the book to start reading.
- Tap the middle of the page to show the controls. The button at the bottom right opens Themes & Settings and Contents.
Looking for something free to try? Standard Ebooks publishes carefully made public-domain EPUBs.
Sync across your devices
Sign in to the same iCloud account on each device and your library, reading positions, bookmarks and settings follow you. Settings › iCloud shows the sync status and a Sync Now button.
Changes from another device arrive when you open the app or tap Sync Now. Downloaded chapters and imported EPUB files stay on the device that has them, so import the same EPUB on your other device to read it there.
Adding sources
Zen Novel Reader comes with no books and no sources. A source is a small plugin that reads one website, and plugins are shared as a repository: one link that lists many of them. Zen Novel Reader reads repositories in the LNReader plugin format, so LNReader's own repository works. Here is the whole flow, using it and Novel Fire as the example.
- Copy the repository link. LNReader's repository is
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LNReader/lnreader-plugins/plugins/v3.0.0/.dist/plugins.min.json - Add the repository. Open the Sources tab, tap + › Add Repository, paste the link and tap Add.
- Pick a source. Adding a repository doesn't add its sources. In the list that opens, set the language to English, find Novel Fire and tap it to add it.
- Find a book. Open the Search tab and search everywhere, or choose Novel Fire to browse its Popular and Latest lists.
- Save it and read. On the book's page, tap Add to Library, then Start Reading. Turn on New Chapters there to download or hear about new chapters.
Sources update themselves from their repository, so there's nothing to reinstall when a website changes. If a site asks you to prove you're human, tap Open Website and pass the check yourself.
Zen Novel Reader isn't affiliated with LNReader, Novel Fire or any website a plugin reads. Plugins are written by other people. A plugin can fetch web pages but can't see your library or files. Only add repositories you trust, and respect each website's terms.
Reading lists and trackers
Sign in to AniList, MyAnimeList, MangaUpdates or Kitsu from Settings › Tracking, then open a book's details and choose Tracking to link it. Your progress there can update as you read. Sign-ins stay on the device you used and are not synced.
Still stuck, or have an idea?
Questions, bug reports and ideas are all welcome. In the app, Settings › About › Send Feedback fills in your app version and device for you. I read every message.
